Our SWAP members benefit from job search support when they arrive at ELC, making it easier for them to find casual paid work in Sydney. This is a service for students on Student Visas who are able to work for up to 20 hours per week while they study full time.

Our SWAP students benefit from job search facilities and support when they arrive at ELC, making it easier for them to find casual work in Sydney.

  • Open a bank account
  • Apply for work permission
  • Apply for a tax-file number
  • Get a mobile phone
  • Prepare a resume
  • Search for and apply for jobs
  • Practise interviewing language and techniques
  • Learn about Australian pay rates and working conditions

During their first week at ELC members have an individual meeting with the SWAP coordinator to apply for work permission, get a tax file number and discuss work options in Australia.

SWAP Options

SWAP members have the opportunity to upgrade their skills and improve their English for the workplace by taking part in our Work Oz seminars including:

  • Workplace health and safety
  • Intensive interview practice
  •  Working in a bar
  • Working in a restaurant
  • Numbers and money
  • The Australian Workplace – Terms and contracts

SWAP Support

Members can make an appointment to discuss their employment with their coordinator at any time.

Requirements

  • No minimum level of English
  • Student Visa

SWAP Membership is free to all student visa holders.

Student visa holders may work for up to 20 hours per week in Australia.

Student visa holders must maintain more than 80% attendance at their school.
